Basic & Advanced Disaster Life Support Training
The National Center for Emergency Medical Preparedness & Response (NCEMPR) in partnership with the Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) South Texas Center will offer Basic and Advanced Disaster Life Support (BDLS & ADLS) training at the South Texas Center in McAllen. NCEMPR, a collaborative Center of the Texas A&M System comprised of elements of the Health Science Center (HSC), Texas Engineering Extension Service/National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center (TEEX/NERRTC) and the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), is led by Professor Scott Lillibridge, executive director of NCEMPR and assistant dean in the Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health. The Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) Course is limited to 100 students and the ADLS to 48 students. The cost of this training will be covered via existing grants and scholarships (a savings of $300‐$500 per student). Participants seeking Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits will be assessed a nominal fee of $15 per course to cover the continuing education and course completion certificates.
BDLS and ADLS have been developed in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and a wide range of health care providers and public health workers. The courses provide a uniform approach to emergency health preparedness and response. BDLS is a one-day didactic course that provides a broad overview of the weapons of mass destruction/effect as well as discussion of topics of natural disasters, public health and psychological issues in disasters. ADLS is two days in duration and includes classroom activity, scenario‐based and “hands‐on” field exercises related to the essential disaster skills for the healthcare and public health community.
Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) is pre‐requisite to the ADLS Course. Continuing education credit will be awarded for the successful completion of BDLS [7.5 Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours and ADLS [15.5 Category 1 CME hours] for a total of 23 Category 1 CME hours. A certificate of completion will also be awarded for both courses.
This course is designed for all levels of health care providers (physicians, nurses, paramedics/EMTs, allied health care) public health workers and members of the first responder community (law enforcement, fire service, emergency management, etc.) with broad public safety responsibilities. Training will occur from 8 am to 5 pm each day with registration beginning promptly at 7:30 am.
